Governance, Media, and Development: Key Findings

The 2009 media and governance donors meeting, held as part of the Strengthening Independent Media Initiative, ended on October 11, following four days of discussions and dialogue among some of the largest and most influential donor organizations and private foundations in the world.

The meeting itself, Governance, Media, and Development: Aligning Strategies to Maximize Results, was followed by a full day of private discussions among donor agencies and foundations,. This discussion, and those that preceded it, highlighted some key areas for continuing collaboration and additional investment. Amadou Ba is co-founder and president of AllAfrica Global Media, Inc., an international multi-media content service provider, systems technology developer, and the largest distibutor of African news and information world wide. Since January 2009 he has also been the acting executive director of the African Media Initiative, a five-year program seeking to profoundly change the continent’s media landscape by improving media freedom, strengthening professional standards and increasing public and private investment in the media sector.

The October 9th session on impact measurement and "making the case" for investments in news and information revealed several trends:

- New academic rigor is needed to support indicators, evaluation, and measurement within new digital media projects and investments. This could unfold within a context of broader academic research and partnerships on media and society.

- There is a need to internationalize and improve media indices and impact assessments including a common tool kits and shared research agendas.

-  The field is moving swiftly, and digital tools may help simplify data and promote the distribution of newly transparent information.

Interview with Eric Newton of Knight Foundation

Eric Newton is the vice president of the journalism program at Knight Foundation. He describes the annual $5 million Knight News Challenge, which aims to bring about news innovation by supporting new technologies and techniques to bring news and information to specific geographic communities around the world. He offers some examples of projects that have been funded including Rhodes University in South Africa, Freedom Fone in Zimbabwe, Ushahidi in Kenya, and the Sochi Olympics citizen journalism project in Russia, and also provides some tips for applicants seeking funding.
